    Aircon Help

Alright i need to sort out the r134 deal. So the 89 came with the early style ac system afaik with dual pressure switches. Is it possible for me to switch to the later style setup with a single switch?

when I did my system, all I did was flush the old oil out, and recharge with compatible oil and 134a. No issues so far, and I am still running both pressure switches. The system runs cold enough to freeze my balls off, so it is running fine. What kind of compressor are you running? They say that the early bosch/behr compressors are not compatible with 134a, but my reman unit (front seal blown on the old one, prior to conversion) is doing just peachy.

one of the switches is a high pressure, the other is low pressure. I believe that one is NLA, IIRC the low pressure switch. if this is the case, I would jumper the wires together. This will fool the circuit, and allow the compressor to come on. if this is the case, just leave the blank off plug in the reciever/drier when you install it. It should be a brass plug, if just plastic, you will need a proper blank off plug, but mine had brass in it.

there are 2 switches available from pelican, one of the has the spades in the T shape connecter which is in my car, the other has straight spade connectors that you wire yourself, are these the same switch with different connections or are they the 2 different switches.

also available is the late style switch which does both i think, it only has 2 wires coming out of it though, is it possible to only use this switch?

I checked on pelican, and find their site to be almost worthless. I then checked realoem, and the exploded diagram shows two switches, but both of them default to the same part number (64538390971) The switch with the two paralell prongs, or at least the part number for it crosses to an E23 chassis, so I would discount it as a generic at least. The other one that is shown (green housing) crosses to early model E30, and is the type that I have, the other is a different plug for late model E30's. all are high side cutoff switches. I would get the one that fits your wiring and call it a day.....

There is a BMW TSB regarding proper conversion from R12 to R134a. It outlines switching from 2 sensors to 1, how to wire it, etc. Give your local dealer a call and see if they can look it up for you, mine did at no charge.
