Will Honing Effect Compression on Reused Rings?

Sending my block out to the machine shop for a hot tanking and magnaflux. It's only got 74k on it and the cylinder wall cross hatching looks good.

I can throw them some extra money to get it honed prior but I was wondering if this would effect compression if I reuse the same piston rings? Machinist said he could just clean it up and keep it within standard spec - but if that's the case then what's the point in paying for it?

With the engine this far down, hone the cylinders and use new rings. The old rings may re-seat, or they may not. In a like manner, have the crank polished and use new bearings.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have no idea why you wouldn't change the rings with the engine torn this far down. Especially with 74k miles on them.

        This is good advice.

Why would you re use rings period? Regardless of mileage, better to buy new rings than to rip apart the engine again when they fail on you

I will agree with the above. I just tried using the originals in the 1uz-fe V8 and broke one when fitting the slugs.

After buying new rings and removing the old ones, they were so brittle it wasnt funny and they had less miles.

I have just finished fitting new rings as I type and about to slot slugs in and I can say that I will have peace of mind knowing that new rings will be in there.

For what they are worth, just do them.

Or waste a week or two trying to use old ones, break one and feel my pain :(

if she goes for that, astroglide up your pole, have her lay on her stomach and slip it in slowly and bury it to your balls and leave it there until she relaxes. once she is used to it slam that ass like a screen door.

Oh and in answer to your q in the title,

The honing wont but the old rings might, so hone and rings FTW

when your done honeing be sure to wipe the cylinders with solvent covered toilet paper to get all of the hone meterial out you would be surprised at how much you will get out even after you think they are clean...

Yup. It's getting hot tanked, magnafluxed, honed and hot tanked again. It'll be damn clean.
