I was just browsing through an old 1996/97 "Original BMW Accessories" brochure, and came across this option that was available for the E30 also. It is called the "comfort" air conditioning. For the newer models, E36, E34 etc, , there is a small description and a couple of pictures, but nothing for the E30, which is not surprising. The fact that the E30 was even mentioned in a 96 brochure was surprising. Only a small symbol, to suggest that it was available for it too. Does anybody know anything about this option? What does it look like? Is there a digital display on this unit? Its functional differences over stock AC?

You mean climate control?
Even on the E30s, the only way you could tell was it had the numbers around the "temperature" dial, and the little sniffer (round piece about the size of a dime with slats in it) that helped maintain the interior temperature... ultra-rare.
"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."

Originally posted by BrewGuys, your cars do not have climate control. I'm pretty sure the little "sniffer" was put in for possible future use, but they never ended up using it. The numbers on the temp dial mean nothing.
My car although AC equipped, has no numbers, but does have that little sensor/sniffer thing. As any other E30 I've ever seen. I always did wonder what the function of this thing was. I have noticed though, that when you set the temp dial at eg, 1/3 up on the cold side (blue range), the AC compressor comes on in cycles. So there must be some kind of thermostat then?
Anyways, I think that the guys up on this thread who mentioned the numbers on their dials, have the AC unit that I"m perhaps looking for. I guess.....

Both of my e30s have the numbers and the sniffer, and are no different than the e30 i had without them. Trust me.
In that case, in other words, everybody is at a loss, just like me, at what this optional AC unit BMW had listed on their options list, looked like.

the e30 is gloriously simple and doesn't have auto temperature monitoring.
The little air vent is just that - and air vent. Heat builds up from the head unit and interior lighting back there and has to go somewhere..
