    Clunk from rear end

    I drive a 87 325i with a manual tranny.
This is my first BMW so I am still learning a ton.
I have searched the forums and haven't found any definitive answers to this.

When driving, the car makes a 'thumping' noise from the rear end, but only at about 2k and 3k rpms. It doesn't do this at any other rpm range. It doesn't matter what gear or speed, the thump is only at 2k and 3k rpms.
I have been told that it is something to do with the driveshaft. I crawled under the car and the driveshaft doesn't have much play in it and the drive axles have good CV boots and no play. I haven't dropped the exhaust or heat shield to check out the CSB, but I was under the impression that if it was bad, I would hear a rubbing sound constantly.

The tranny mounts are trashed and will be replaced, but would this cause the thumping sound? Any ideas?

hopefully this hasn't been covered a million times before.

Does it do this just during hard acceleration, or anytime you hit 2k-3k rpm?

Is it a recurring thing (clunk clunk clunk clunk etc.) or just a single "clunk"?

"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."

It occurs under hard acceleration and also just when accelerating normally.
The noise is like a 'clunk clunk clunk' right around 2k and 3k rpms, its real brief, but very noticeable.
It does this when going straight, in corners going left or right. It is a constant thing at those rpms.

well sounds like what i had about 3 weeks ago. ended up being the wheel bearing. I was fortunant to have a spare parts car so i just swaped the entire trailing arm. I was able to to determin which side it was by jacking up one side at a time and jerking the cv axle back and forth by hand. The one that made the clunk sound was the side with the bad bearing.

According to the previous owner, the rear wheel bearings were replaced 60 k ago.
I guess its time to bust out the bentley and see how to check the rear wheel bearings. Are they a PITA to change as I have heard?

well like I said I was fortunant to have a parts car and just swapped eniter trailing arms. Changing those are a pretty good job.Took me about 4 1/2 hours to swap and cost me nothing. I have only changed a front wheel bearing myself and if I had the $$ at the time I would have just had it changed. The rear looks like a real PITA as you said.
