    Ignition lock stuck

So I've been driving my car around like this for about 6 months now...

Hot wired becuase the ignition will only 1/4 turn. just enough to unlock the steering.

Now this would normally not phase me. I was actually just going to solder a few wires together to give a toggle ignition and button start. But recently it has become a major safety hazard becuase the key easily flips back to lock. While I'm driving. NOT COOL!!! but it is fun to drive in a circle, lock the steering get out of the car and watch it drive around.

Anyway how do I fix this? I'm short on $$$ now. I know that I need a new ignition cylinder. And I will get one asap but I need a temporary solution. Does anyone know a way to just disable the steering lock??

    Thanks in advance

The steering lock can be removed. You have to unlock the steering an pull the wheel. Then it is just a matter of removing a pin and pulling the lock bar.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have a full set of locks with key if you want to change out the cylinders and not deal with disableing the steering lock. It would be very difficult to pull the wheel without it being able to lock!
The difference between porcupines and BMWs is that porcupines have the pricks on the outside!

That didn't go as planned.... :drink:

Maybe next time we work on the car first, then break out the drinks?

Get it done before I get back from Europe. I wanna see what you come up with.

So I did get to work on it a little later...

            SUCCESS!

            Thanks jlevie

            Removed bolt

Tried to pull the pin. Then got bored... so I drilled out the punched end, cut it and pulled it out. I have other pins just like this from spare AR-15 parts, so I could still reinstall the lock.

Now for the button start! so far I've only collected the hardware

I'm currently searching the pins that I need to solder to... Anyone got a link?

Haha! Any progress on getting those seta parts cleaned? I need that engine gone so I can do the M30 swap on my eta.

If you haven't yet, grab the pistons and small parts, etc and get them cleaned. We'll get the block when I get back, then slap that son back together and get you swapped. BMW's are way easier than Z28 Camaros.....
