Opinions on M40

Hi guys, just after a bit of info on M40 engines. not sure if you got them over here seen as they came in FL 318i. I know they got a bit more power and torqu ethan M10 but does anyone have specs on them? I have conflicting info, is it dohc or sohc and 16v or 8v? And what are they like for reliablilty, and any other pros and cons.

Dear fren, there's no M40 engine for the US market....

All 318i in US is fitted with the M42 engine...

M40 is an 8v engine, and as Fabian mentioned was never exported to the US........only rest of the world.

If you like power, they are nothing to rave about, but can be stroked to 1.8L......along with an aggressive cam you can see appx 140hp (similar to the 16v M42 in the 318is).

Turbo's are another option ;)

the M40 shares the same block with the M42.... or should I say the M42 is derived from the M40.. and the M40 is a lower compression engine with CR of 8.8....

I thought they came as 1.8 and 1.6? So its the same block as M42 but just with 8v and sohc?

Early 318i came with the M10.(US market) and wat a great motor that is.

m40 is a waste of time IMO. i have seen one that was worked and massaged, put down decent numbers, but for the money, id leave it alone.
