2 Calipers on 1 Rotor?

    2 Calipers on 1 Rotor?

    Has anyone done such a mod before? with 2 e30 325 calipers on 1 rotor. 1 in the front and the stock ones in the back. Will it be too much force(friction) for the rotor? is it possilbe will the rotors have breathing problems?

    Why?

    Unless you plan on fitting some 335 hoosiers all around, one caliper per rotor will do just fine. If you want more stopping power, upgrade to e36 m3 brakes or do a BBK.

      Whats the point in that? It will increase unsprung weight. More important to get proper cooling to rotors or get bigger ones.

          The only car I've seen with 2 calipers are 1970s Rolls Royces that weigh over 3 tons. There's really no need for that on a car as light as an E30; good pads and/or a BBK is more than enough.

            Also keep in mind your stopping power is only as good as the connection between the car and the ground.

            IE the grip of the tire. Wider and stickier the better.

              some :edit: new :edit: of the higer end cars have this. its more of a wiper though. when it rains the "glaze" the rotor before it gets to the "primary" calipers and pads. that way it is a dry braking surface :!:

                On F1 cars they use a setup that brakes all the way around the disk if I'm not mistaken... This being said, we don't have F1 cars; good pads, Motul RBF600 and some brake ducting will do wonders.

                  also F1 cars also have huge forced air ducts into the brakes so they stay cool. i think 2 calipers are overkill. just get a good BBK kit or good pad's stainless lines, and good brake fluid. im going to a BBK personaly, because i like the look of the big calipers, and im making my own kit... but if i didn't have that option id just stick to the good pads, rotors, lines, and fluid.

                    Conceptually this should work; it would probably cause more heat than the rotor could probably dissipate though.

                    I believe the main reason that you don't see this more often is that it adds more unsprung weight than just having a larger single caliper.

                        My dad rigged up a set of dual-caliper front brakes for his S14/2002tii. He read a book on it at Gary Bosserts and decided to build a setup for the '02. He tracked the car regularly at CCA events, I don't think he had many problems, worked great and still does for the current owner. It's possible you can run better setups for cheaper though, I really don't know.

                              My friend's new H1 he ordered with a bigger engine is above 7 TONS.. thats 14k pounds. :shock:
