That's worth looking into. I'll check around to see if any A/C service centers use or can provide me with that. I don't know if NY has any additional regs on A/C refrigerant. When I was living in GA a number of years back, they did recharge me with I believe an R12 equivalent. When I moved back to NY, I was told I had to covert the refrigerant. They put on the new nozzle/valve and charged up the system. They let me test it out before leaving and I pointed out that it wasn't so cool at idle. They said to rev up the engine and it should get nice and cold. Maybe so, but if you want to cool off your car for 10-minutes before you get into it on a hot summer day, you're shit outa luck.

That may have been a mistake based on the presence of the R12 type test ports. As far as I know the R12 replacements are legal everywhere as they don't contain florocarbons.

If all the conversion consisted of was the R134 fittings, it would be easy to revert to an R12 replacement. If the expansion valve was changed, it would need to be changed back.

Did some research on Freeze 12. Some say that it causes excessive moisture buildup within the system leading to rust. Others say it has seemed to work well and yet others say it's highly flammable and wouldn't want it in their car. I'm going to try to find a local service center that specializes in AC and see if they use Freeze 12 or an alternative refrigerant that is closer to R12 than R134a. I'll need to have them evacuate my current refrigerant, in order to go back to an R12 equivalent. If I can get the air back to being cold at engine idle, that would be great.

The 2-60 unit works for me.

4-60 is better.

why not just use r13a refrigerant in a r12 compressor?
