It did try to return, but the friction between the strut mount and the top spring pad would make it stick. I just had the order of the washers wrong.

Here's a diagram from realoem. The green arrow shows you where the washer should go. The red arrow shows you where I put the washer, which is bad and that's how I ended up with sticky steering.

OP did your steering wheel attempt to return to the center despite having some play?

    Update,
I did place the washer in the wrong place. I put the washer on the bottom of the top spring pad. It goes on the top between the pad and the strut mount. Realoem like you guys said has the perfect illustration.

    Thanks everyone!
    Rookie mistake:-)

Thanks for the info! At least I'll know what to look out for now.

I bought the Racing Dynamics blue springs from KillaCams.
I'm planning on installing them two weeks from now. Since I'll have to take everything apart again for the springs I'll check for the washers.

You forgot the washer between the strut and the strut mount. Common issue.

I agree with shiftbmw. It sounds like the upper strut mounts & washers weren't properly assembled. You can see how the parts are supposed to be assembled at realoem.com.

Isnt there something you have to tighten loaded on the suspension?

Perhaps try rechecking the order of your washers on your strut mount? I got the order wrong once and the steering was awefully sticky and had a hard time returning to center.
