Facelift starter motor on pre facelift

just put in a starter motor that i think is from a facelift, into my pre FL....doesnt sound healthy when its trying to start (and it doesnt start)....it fits physically so i imagine its just something to do with the wiring.....is there anyway to modify it so it works....not keen on taking it out again....

Should work just fine, the wiring is different between a few, but it's just a spade connector versus a ring connector for the small guage wires.

Yea it should work fine. The later starter is smaller and lighter, but the early big ol thing tends to last longer.

the facelift one i got is actually bigger.....the one i took off was the one that looks like a perfect cylinder....small n compact.

the facelift one (the one on there now) has an extra contact.....which bentleys describes as load reduction relay, do i need to take this into account? there is always the option that the starter i put in is buggered.....it sounds like its hitting but not engaging the flywheel properly. the old one i could hear spinning but not engaging at all....i might just replace the solenoid and whack that one back in

They are just referring to the early aluminum bumpers vs the later plastic ones. Happened around '88. There are more than just cosmetic differences.
