318 to 325 swap how to get the Tach working

Hey, need some help on this. I spent about two days trying to figure out the cluster, if i just needed to replace the tach from the 318 to a 325 or replace the complete cluster. I verifyed all the part numbers comparing the ones of the 325 and 318 and from ETK. They where all the same so i figured thats not the problem. When i would replace the tach from the 318 to 325, the reading in rpm was still way off. So i thought it could be that chip clipped in the right bottom front of the cluster's face. Changed that and still no difference. So i just replaced the 318 cluster to a 325 cluster and everything was perfect. I was curious about the tach's, so i replace the tach from the 325 cluster to the 318 tach and the rpm reading was perfect also, meaning that the tach of a 318 or 325 is the same. My question is is there any trick to the cluster, somehow to bypass it without needing to replace it when swaping from a 4cyl to a 6cyl??? I noticed at the bottom back of the cluster some holes with different numbers, when i pulled out the board wich have the lithium batteries, at the same place where the holes are on the cluster, you can somehow program the board using a wire to jump the connections.

it will still be lighter than a 325is, and have the torque of the m20b25.....shut up.

didn't you total your 318???? So don't talk about "wrecking that 318" when it still is driving.......

I believe it has something to do with the coding plug. It would convert it to a 6cyl reading instead of 4cyl. James C used a M3 tach on his eta, Stu Mc put in a S50 in his M42......etc etc. Someone will know exactly.

Thanks again, my problem is solved but i would like someone to give us the secret about these clusters in the years 89-91, i'm shure that theirs a way to convert without replacing the cluster or tach. Oh BTW bought this car with the M42 overheated and cracked head. Had my super eta 2.7L engine lying around in my garage. Guess what was the cheaper way for me??? Oh it might be heavy, but any time it will take your M42. It still a BMW engine that's in there, regular e30's came originally with that engine so what's the problem dude!
P.S. Dont take this personnally just kidding around ;)

it's a super eta converted to an "i". i used the intake, throttle, cam and ecu from a 1990 325i. I just love the way this thread turned out.... I ask for some help from BMW fellow's and this is what i get. People that put their nose and say stuff, when they dont even know about the car. This car was bought to fix it and sell.
My car is a original 1991 318is. Why would i go throught the trouble and use as my user name "1991318is" if i dont care about the M42.
Second, yes i own a M42 for the last 4 years, and honnestly i got bored of it. I've decided to go with the M50 as my project. And yes mc henri has done it also, and i fully understaind. This does'int mean that i do not respect 318is M42, netheir have i ever mentioned it. So please if you cant help me out for what i asked for, dont bother polluting my thread.
