    problems

I am having some problems with my cluster. The car is a 1984 318i.

I can not get the temp guage to work. As of now I do not have an si board in the car because it was completly shot. Do you have to have a si board for the temp guage to work? When i turn the car on, The guage does register that it is getting power, but that is it. It will not read any input from the sender. I checked the sender unit with a multi meter and it passes. Is it just my guage broke, or something else?

Also I have bad connection where the harness meets the cluster. I can play with this connection and turn my speedo on and off. Is it normal for this connection to go bad.

I knon this is a double post but the other post is in m10, and there is just not much traffic there.

A working SI board is required for the temp gage to work. The flaky connection could be in the harness/plug, but the odds are that there are bad solder joints between the socket and the PCB.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      Ok that makes since?

Next question, Is it possible to swap a newer e30 cluster in the place of an older one? would i just have to change the temp sender unit?

Yes. But you should get one from a 318.

could you just put the sender in the same spot as it is in now. Just screws in, same threads and everything, and would that be the only thing i would have to change?
