What is this light for? I cant find it in the manual!
Its a light that is not used to the best of my knowledge. On the spare board I have that socket doesn't even have copper exposed on the board, let alone a bulb etc.

I think it's supposed to come on when you have only parking lights on, not the main headlights. Euro spec. of couse. Who knows why yours is hooked up, like Jordan said the socket isnt even wired up on US spec cars. Somebody must've rigged it there for some reason.
its a dead socket thats for sure, does your engine light work? i remember when i put my dash back in i pu the engine light in the wrong socket and it just pushes in and has its own power so it can go anywhere and work and i had it in that socket.
but isnt the check engine light the one in the middle between the speedo and rpm gauges? im so lost with this one, since you said NO US spec cars had that light wired up. Im beginning to wonder if the previous owner had the gauges swapped out with a lower mileage set and plugged it up incorrectly.
Is there another check engine light besides the one that appears between the speedo and rpm gauges?
Another strange phenomenon that happens when I first turn on my car is the CHECK light between the speedo and rpm blinking, along with the "brake lights" light on the check control. But it goes away as soon as you hit the brakes. I wonder if that has anything to do with the weird light that comes on at idle. I need a local expert to take a look at my car in person.

The light in between the rpm and speedo is the light that blinks in reference with the check panel above your rear-view mirror. If one of those lights is on, the check light will blink, and then you just press the test button and it'll stop. It's normal for your brake lights light to come on when you first start and stay on until you hit the brakes. Once you hit the brakes, it completes the circuit (or something like that), causing the light to stay off. It'll come back on if one of your lights goes out, or you used cheap brass on the third brakelight.
Hope that helps a little bit.
Edit: Forgot to tell you that there is another check engine light, and its all the way on the left of the bottom set of lights on your dash. So where your mysterious green arrows light is on the bottom, look more to the left and you should see it. Hopefully, you'll never see it on while your car is running!
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
Mark: "You never will."
if the check engine light bulb just happened to be placed in the wrong socket, would that actually be the check engine light coming on, just out the wrong socket?
Like, is this assembly similar to the taillights? Where it doesnt matter where the bulb goes. Which ever socket has a bulb in it, will become active. Any socket without a bulb will not be active.
sorta, its got its own 2 wires a ground and power and jsut slides into any socket you want, so if the guy put it in the wrong socket then when the engine light is on the light you see there would light up when in reality its your engine light, when you turn the key on the far bottom left there should be a check engine light on with all the other lights, if not that green light is your check engine light.

okay, upon turning the key to the ON position, all the service lights come on including that strange green light, but no check engine light. if i remember correctly, on the left side of the service light display, only the foglight light and the weird green light came on. everything else was on the right side (parking brake, brake lining, etc.)
then that green one is your engine light, it only takes like 5-10 min to take out the cluster so it it would be a good idea to change it over unless you dont care.
I guess Ill fix that sometime tomorrow. It suprisingly hasnt come on at all today. Maybe that Seafoam stuff I put in the gas tank did something right?
The green light is for your blinkers on a hauler
at least on my 324d before ( if I connect the connecter on the tow hook and used my turn signals it illumates)

that is very interesting to know. i suppose the tow package wasnt a popular option on the e30.
