To guys with an oil temp gauge, question

From a cold start, how does the oil temperature relate to water temp? Does it take longer to warm up to spec, vary depending on ambient temp and driving style, etc?

Reason I'm asking is that we all know to take it easy while the oil is warming, but I have no idea on when that point is. If I can relate it to the water temp roughly I'll feel a lot more comfortable.

Oil warms up alot slower then the water does.

When my water temp is about 1/4 my oil is barely 140ºF or so. I like to wait till 150ºF before I really lay into the throttle.

After being fully warmed up the oil gets to about 220ºF

My oil rarely breaks the 200 degree mark unless I am autocrossing or doing alot of mountain driving. Of course I am also running conventional oil.
It does take much longer to warm the oil up though.

So, would you say roughly twice the amount of time as the water temp to reach operating temp, or something else?

I'd say once your coolant temp is stabilized, you're fine. I wouldn't worry about oil temp.
