wow, i'm stupid... i broke my key. now what?

Ok, so i noticed that my key wasn't going smoothly into the trunk lock... i took it out, noticed that it was bent by 1-2 degrees... i ever so carefully tried to bend it back, and it just snapped in my hands.

I can't seem to find my spare... not sure why. What course of action can I take? I was thinking...

    1) see if a locksmith can make me another key somehow
    2) ask a welding shop to try and temporarilly put it back together (i need to move for street sweeping
    3) goto bmw? Not sure if they can help me, but if they can - it will be at a rape price.

    Thanks in advance guys...

Go to a dealer with your VIN # & proof of ownership, they can make you a key.

would you happen to have a ball-park idea on price/time? I'd like to move my car on wednesday for street sweeping, but maybe i'll just have to bend over and pay the ticket for doing something really stupid...

They can cut it while you wait. It doesn't take long, maybe 10 minutes. It'll probably cost 15-25 bucks depending on the dealer.

well my key cost me about 30 bucks cdn. i think it was and it took about 3-5 business days.

the price depends on what kind of key you get. the one with the light, all metal, the small wallet one, or the plastic covered one.

I have broken my key as well, when I was at college. I used AAA, but the locksmith came to me (this was Sunday night), took my key, went and made me a new one, and brought it back. Whole thing took less then 30 minutes. Hit up a locksmith, pay $5 and get it done.

thank you all very much for your reponses. I'm gonna hunt down a locksmith first, if they can't help me, i'll call AAA. Once i get my car moved for street sweeping, i'll goto BMW and get another fresh one done.

I think that's correct, and not expensive at all! I would check that out first.

I Had an issue with my key recently. All I had for the car was the vallet key and it was excessivly worn. I went to the dealer with vin # ,etc, cost twenty bucks, took three days, and didn't fit.
                  No refund on keys.

I went to Balport Lock & Safe in Newport Beach, Ca. A guy named Vince came out, took
the glove box lock, grinded a new key, recut my factory key (I just paid $20 for), and both keys
work perfect. Took 20 minutes. He said the Glovebox lock had 7 out of the 11 tumblers needed
to cut the key, said the last 4 didn't matter. Very Good Service. Cost $20

So I have now paid $40 for two keys.

Just go to a locksmith save yourself time and money.
