differences between early and late model on rear shelfs

You mean the parcel shelf? I have no idea.

I do know that from '88 onward BMW gave the rear tail lights a facelift. This does not apply to M3s, however...

The 3rd brake light is the only molding difference I'm aware of.

The only difference is the third brake light.

Cars with premium audio had larger speaker cutouts, cars with regular audio had smaller cutouts, but were perforated for the larger ones.

Yes..there was a flat early kind, the in between years with the 3rd brake light mounted on top, and the late model with the molded 3rd brake light UNDER the rear shelf AND the e30m3 one with no 3rd brake light opening/area.
