Registration and ID. I think you have to do it in person because the keys come from Germany, I don't think each dealer has a key cutting machine. Or you can go to a Home Depot or some other hardware store or lock smith and get a crappy tin key, I have one and the torque from locking the door is twisting the key shaft, still works but I hope it doesn't break in the ignition one day.

Just go up to the stealership and present your registration. They take down your VIN and in about two weeks you have your key. That's all I needed to do here in NC.
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
        Mark: "You never will."

New keys are $50 or so, not cut at the dealership. You have to present proof of ownership, and ID. Takes two weeks as said.

You also have the option of buying a bmw key blank off ebay and having your local hardware store cut it for you. I did this and it has worked fine for me.

I got a key cut at Lowe's for $3.00 and I bought the blank on eBay for $10.00

Its an actual OEM key with the light & everything.

My dealership stopped carying blanks. They just said find a blank and go to a locksmith. Only the fancy keys need to be bought from the dealer. My Ti's key took less then a week from germany.

I ordered a blank for my e30 from eBay. The blank had "Germany" embossed in the metal, but it was shipped from Taiwan. Hummmmm.

Anyway, the locksmith who cut it for me said it was not the real deal, as they are stainless and hard to cut. This one was chrome over brass, and cut easy.

I only have one key and wanted to get a spare. Went to Home Depot and Lowes they told me they do not have "blanks". Ok I get that. Bought one of ebay then went to them again with the key AND the blank. They said they do not have the template for BMW! WTF?!? Can't they just copy the stupid key?

I will have to go to the Dealer to see if they can cut it out for me.

                        This sucks...

Paid about $70 after tax at stealership to get a new key after I completely broke mine. Took 2 business days.

My nearest stealership, quoted me right around $30 for a new key, last fall.

Yep, went to the Stealership last night and they said the same thing: "You have to order a new one from BMW Germany" Great!
I will go to a Locksmith to get the key copied!
