BTW, do the "i" motors have an ICM as well? My idle ramps up to 2000 randomly and is horrible with it when I turn the a/c on. I already have a new throttle body hose and icv. Can you tell me more about this ICM you speak of? Thanks.
no US-market "i"s had an ICM. Only etas and early Euro 2.3i's with Motronic 1.0. Idle speed control was intergraded into the DME with all Motronic 1.1/1.3. (87+ "i" and 88 s-etas)

Find another ETA with a nice idle and swap that control module.

IIRC the ICV can go bad and burn out the ICM, to be safe you should really test the current flow to the ICV to make sure it isn't shorting out. I think the current should 200-300mA but don't quote me. The Bentley manual tells you how to do it and what the right numbers are I would start there.

Ok thanks. I just had the icv out, cleaned and reinstalled. I will now check the current..

While I'm here, does anyone know about checking the afm or throttle body sensor?

All of that is covered in the ETM. Have you downloaded it yet?
