    Odometer interchangability.

Found an 88 325i in the yard with no stripped odo gears and grabbed it. Not in my car I have a VDO symbol on the front face, VDO labeled blue case, a motometer main board, VDO gas and coolant gauges and I didn't remove the Tach to see what it was labeled. I have the stock 3.89 coding plug.

The pulled speedo is a motometer speedo and I grabbed the 88's coding plug (a 3.87)

Obviously the ODO gears don't swap over, they are different set ups but, can the whole ODO set up swap over? or maybe the entire speedo?

I searched but, couldn't find anything definitive.

Meh, decided to just go for it.

Pulled the old speedo out as a whole unit and placed the JY unit into my cluster with no other mods. Plugged it all back in and went for a drive.

    GPS verified speed.

Speedo showed 70mph when GPS showed 66mph = speedo showsw 5.8% faster
stock 195/65/14 vs 215/40/16 = speedo theoretically should should show 5.3% faster. (1010 tires calculator)

.5% difference is acceptable to me. I have no doubt that with the OE rims/tires back on it would be perfect.

Good to know, I have a motometer in my car and a VDO as a spare in the closet. Thanks.

No problem :-) Just don't forget to try to GPS verify your speed just in case my occasion isn't "normal"

On a side question to anyone who may read. Are all of the coding plugs interchangeable between moto/vdo units? Meaning a 3.87 will correct for a 3.87 no matter what cluster? Cause if so I am going to start collecting coding plugs haha.
