    Change Throwout bearing?

Can I do it without seperating the engine and tranny? Can I do it with the drivetrain still in the car?

Awesome. So looking forward to that project.

Does it have to be changed? What does it do exactly?

Why are you doing it in the frist place would be my question. I would put a new clutch kit in and change all the seals on the trans input shaft and shift slector seals. Rebluid your shift linkage, check and see if your flex disc is cracked and replace the tranny mounts if they were oil soaked.

It may seem like alot to change all of that stuff, but trust me, it's worth it. Once you have that tranny out you want to take the opportunity to replace everything. You dont want to have to pull the tranny every other month.

I get all that. Any time I go into something, I replace everything I take out to get to it, and everything around it while I'm there.

Problem is, the tranny is apparently new/rebuilt, along with the clutch according to the PO. So that's why the TO bearing is all I'm worried about. I don't want to go in there just for that...

Because it makes a rattling/grinding noise until I press in the clutch. I don't get along well with rattling and grinding.

Throw out beairngs are typically included when you buy the clutch kit. The rattling is 99% of the time the input shaft bearing on these cars. Easiest way to tell is if the rattling goes away when you first touch the clutch pedal (when the throw out gets contacted) or if it doesnt go away until the pedal is all the way down (input shaft released).

Finally. Someone explains the difference between the input shaft bearing symptoms and the TOB symptoms :) Thanks man, I owe you. I'll check it out when I get the car, and I'll know the answer. I know that the TOB's are included with most clutch kits, but isnt there a way to put it in wrong?

There really is no worng way to put in a TO bearing, if they did you wouldn't be able to shift at all. And you never stated what the problem was, rattling, etc. But adam is right, try that and see.

My bad...that question was asked in another post :) Good to know about the TO bearing though.

My throw out bearing has been making that grinding noise since I got the black car..... which was mid-2003. Never had any issues in drivability.... just the noise.

So if it goes away when you just touch the clutch pedal, it's the TOB? Or is it the input shaft bearing?
