e28 m30 question

My buddy has an 84 533i with an 88 m30b32 and it shuts off completely at random when he's been driving it lately. It doesn't sputter or run bad before it dies, he'll just be driving and it'll shut off like he turned the key off. All electrical stays on, and it usually starts right back up and runs fine aside from one time when it died, it took a half hour of trying but finally started back up and ran perfectly. He thinks it could be the airflow meter from research, but can anybody speak on this if its ever happened to you? It'd be much appreciated. Mods, if this should be moved to m30 swap section or anything let me know.

I'll let him know, at this point he's trying any ideas people throw his way (he's not mechanically inclined and i wont have time to help him for weeks)
