Things to do with head off

I have my head off ATM (possibly cracked :( )

wondering what the best way to clean my intake manifold/ throttle body and all that would be. soak it in something? toothbrush?

and what else you guys can recomend doing/checking out while its all apart?

I plan on painting my rockercover and intake.
also looking at gettting some headers. are there any off the shelf ones you can recomend?

port/polish exhaust ports, polish combustion chamber, DO NOT TOUCH INTAKE PORTS, lighter valves and valve springs, new cam, etc. I think the IE shorty headers are pretty cheap.

Yeah was going to get head port polished. why only do exhaust?
I will find out what the condition of head is this week. and go from there.

dont really have a lot of $$ to play with, so i might leave the valves.
And i have a mild cam already.

The intake side needs some sort of ruffness to help the fuel and air to mix together, if it's polished perfectly smooth you won't get a good mixture. Some is good, but most do a swill pattern to help over come the smoothness.

            thanks guys.

anything else that should be done.
            water pump? hoses? etc

and can i just degrease the inside of the intake, hose it out and let it dry?
            what about throttle body, AFM?

              port it

yeah dude get the water pump done especially if ur having overheating problems. Get exhaust and intake port and polished, this doesnt mean that they have to use a fine as stone to do the intake, they can leave it a texured surface, the more air in and out the better. Then get the head shaved to up the compression, wack on a turbo and run the sucker on methaneol :D
              Yeah it'll buff out!

Sound like you must of been r3ving the car a bit hard in third gear whilst sitting near the "RED" zone to have caused the problems you got!!
Whilst you have the head off i agree with 'drifter' you should get a new water pump!!! Also put on one of those new turbos you have been on about not giving to much away as they are un reveiled as yet!!!

Make sure you have atleast $1000 to spend for the best results or u may aswell give your car away to someone else with an e30!!! hhhm hhhm hhmm.... :D
                  Da Breeze....Can you feel it?

Replace all the hoses in the engine compartment - fuel, water, and air - with new clamps for everything. Most are probably original and if you''ve been running with high temps they may be weak, brittle or leaking. Might as well put in a new fuel filter and associated hoses there as well. Take a wire brush and metal pick and clean all the deposits off the ends of the water hoses before putting the new hoses on.

You probably have a bunch of broken plastic clips for all those hoses and most are available aftermarket for fairly cheap. I've always found it nice to replace them and have it be original-like.

New thermostat to go with the water pump, of course. And new belts. Make sure all the old tape on your wiring is still doing its job and put new tape on where needed. There's this stuff called Atomic Tape (I don't know if you have it down there) that is stretchy and rubbery and sticks to itself that works well. Won't dry out and fall off or get gooey either.

Make sure the fan clutch is good. You've looked at the distibutor cap, rotor, and plugs so you'll make that call yourself.

Have fun. I just did most of this when my radiator broke last weekend. I'd been planning to do part of it and just went for the whole thing when the 'opportunity' presented itself.

                          ...

If uve got a car which has just got an engine conversion then u probably already have new hoses all round caz the custom aluminum radiator probably means someone has spents some money getting things rite, tho the stuffed fan clutch probably means it wasnt rebuilt as soon as u think!

I don't know about that. A lot of the hoses for the heater and to the throttle body were probably reused. Besides, I hasd a hose burst on me recently that looked good so peace of mind in my case meant replacing everything regardless of how it looked.

AutohausAZ has just about any hose you need and they ship international but the hoses don't come in a kit. They do a pretty good job of listing the hoses for your particular car and they use all BMW part numbers but if you have access to ETK it makes it easier to figure out what you need. Go here for instuctions on how to get access to BMWs online etk. I haven't used it myself so good luck.

I think that a lot of hoses/everything was reused.

                              thanks for the links.
