    Flywheel cover

I was slowly dismantling the underside of the 325e and found that there is no cover between the engine and transmission bellhousing. You can look right at the flywheel. Usually, in my experience, I have seen a thin sheetmetal, steel, or aluminum cover that will prevent stones/debris from getting in the bellhousing. Usually, it would not be removeable without seperating the bellhousing and engine. The previous owner says that It never had one on the 1985 model. I have a hard time beliving this. can you tell me if there is supposed to be one there? if not, I'm just going to make one out of sheetmetal.
