    charging system on 1991 318is

alrighty people iv got a problem that just recently started. when my car is off i have 12.5 volts or whatever normal is somwhere arround there, but when i start it it drops to 12.28 which is 1.2 volts below normal, but if i rev it up it gets to the normal 13.5. i'v checked all the wires, ran a new ground with 6 guage wire grounded to the hood rails but that only boosted my idling voltage to 12.31 which isn't really anything. the belt seems pretty tight however with force you can spin the pully without the belt moving, im not sure if its slipping im going to check that tomorrow, anyone got any ideas if that fails?

Check your voltage regulator/ brushes. Minimum length is 5mm IIRC.

Bolted to the back of the alternator with two phillips screws.

its a new alt. i bought a gm one cause its was 120 amps for my stereo system cause it went through 2 of the bmw ones. its a 2 wire configuration, so it plugged right in, it is self exciting but you can hook up the excitor wire to it, i did so the batt. light wouldn't be on all the time, and its worked for over a year now with absolutly no problems, and just this week the bat light comes on faintly.
