    Engine "spits and sputters?"

In my '89 325i the engine kind of "sputters." It's hard to describe without making the noise myself, but it's almost like the rpms are fluctuating except they're not. It's as if I'm kind of fluttering on the gas only I'm not moving my foot. For the most part I think I feel it more than I hear it. I can feel the car doing an almost lunging motion in those low gears. It's the original engine and my brothers 78? 6 series did this (especially in the rain). How did his get fixed? When he did his engine swap, that fixed it. Lol.

I'm just wondering if this is a common thing with these engines. Sorry I can't be more descriptive, but if you've had this same "problem" you know what I'm referring to. The engine itself has had most of the necessary replacements done. Spark plugs, hoses, etc. I run regular unleaded gas. I put in premium once and heard/felt no difference.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Have you had any of the intake hoses off recently? Any of this tune up stuff get done right before this problem occurred?

Sounds like a low/surging idle, could be a million things.

If it's the fluttering sound I'm thinking of and happening at low RPMs only/usually, then it is most likely a fuel problem from my experience.

        Likely causes:
        Fuel filter
        Fuel pump
        Injectors
        Fuel Pressure regulator
        Spark
