I spoke to a guy on the phone about a 89 325i. He had mentioned that the car makes a rattling nose shifting from first to second. He said it wasn't the transmission and that he thinks its the clutch bearing. He also mentioned it being a common problem for that year and model, does anyone know anything about this?

A bad throw out bearing would make noise every time the clutch was used, as would a bad pilot bearing. A noise that only occurs of a 1-2 shift sounds more like a problem within the transmission. But there are other possibilities. Get the car inspected by a BMW tech and you'll have a better idea as to what's wrong. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
