Ok, so I have a friend's 325is sitting at my place right now. It was running fine a week ago, however, SOMETING TERRIBLE HAS HAPPENED!!
This is a really long story, involving multiple people to blame but here is the short version.
I looked at the alternator and it looked like it may be cooked. Also, there are some little wires that are a little melty, going to the alternator from the battery. I'm going to replace that, but do you think that the car has been more severely damaged? Is it worth going through all the hassle of finding out what is wrong with it? It's probably going to go to the junk yard/part out if it's any more then $100-200 dollars repair.
I know it's hard to diagnose over the interwebz, but we'll see what you all know.

- Old battery died.
- New battery was purchased.
- New battery was hooked up backwards. (+/- and -/+)
- Car was started, smokey smell and a weird noise were noted.
- Owner unhooked the battery, realized their error and called it a night.
- I came over, hooked it up properly, replaced 2 fuses, started the car first try.
- Let the car run, it smelled like burning in the engine bay, even after a few minutes of idling.
- Turned it off, but even with the key out of the car the battery indicator light stayed on.
- Got back to the car the next day and the indicator light was out and the battery was dead.
