if he lost the key to the trunk that means he already changed the lock once from another car. Your original key should still unlock the trunk if you have central locking just by unlocking it from the drivers side. if you cannot open it then punch a screw driver through it and once it is open - two 10mm bolts hold the lock in and can be removed from inside. Then get yourself a new trunk lock. if you're really handy; get the key code from dealership using the last 7 of the vin. then you can take any trunk lock and re-code it. just make sure you have the right number "keys" to do it.
I had a different trunk lock installed with a different key; I had the old lock which was seized lying around and decided to try my hands at it. After getting it apart I cleaned removed the "key codes" in sequence (remember this -it's very important) lubed it and re-installed the key codes and basically put everything back together. Before installing however, I tested the key with the lock to make sure it turned and worked properly. then I installed it back into the car.sigpic -
So you had 3 keys when you bought the car?Comment

no I had two. one ignition/door locks, one for the trunk lock. I repaired the trunk lock so now I only have 1 key. He took the old trunk lock out and installed another used one having me to need two keys at all times. He was to lazy or just didn't know how to fix the original trunk lock.sigpicComment

Hmmm...my car has 2 as well...but 1 for the doors/trunk, 1 for the ignition. Does that mean that one or the other has been swapped out?Comment

The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

most likely...the easier I would think of the 2 would be the ignition. Although I have personally never removed an ign lock before. There is a way to find out which is original as suggested above. Last 7 of vin to dealership with ownership and get the key code from them. if you have an original key their should be a number stamped on it. again I'm not entirely sure but they can trace the key code with this number. Regardless, can retrieve it. If you get a key ordered through vin then you'll know for sure. but that can be very expensive. I'd live with it unless you're really picky like me and would be willing to do the work to change it.
A lock smith as also mentioned above would most probably cost you as much as getting a key to vin ordered from bmw.sigpicComment

how do i punch the screwdriver through it? just put a flathead in the keyhole and hammer it? lol.if he lost the key to the trunk that means he already changed the lock once from another car. Yes, the silver piece may slide in as you hammer away; basically you want to break the tumbler so you can turn the lock to get access.
the other way of trying to open the trunk is through the ski package through hole behind the center arm rest in the back seat. if you have it that is.
But you would need a really steady and long arm along with something to catch the pin which move up and down with the door actuator. that's providing it is exposed already. :-)
Even after removing the complete lock you can still close the trunk. There will of course be a hole there but to the right of the hole you will see a vertical bar; press that in and the trunk will open.sigpicComment

okay.. so let me get this straight before i try it.. i have to jam a big flathead screwdriver into the tumbler, to break it. and which it will allow me to turn the screwdriver to unlock the trunk and open it? i dont want to damage anything and make it even more impossible to get to the trunk, and i dont think i have the ski passage..Comment

Dude.....!!!! you are still outside your trunk...what possible scenario could be worse?
call a lock smith; drop 100-150 bucks and he'll get the lock open. that's your other option..
u decide. (Grin)sigpicComment
