In California, it's a good idea to leave that cable broken in case you ever get pulled over and the cop wants to take a look at your engine bay ;)

your wire might have snapped. Look into the front of the grill, near the driver's side headlight. There should be a little hole where you can stick a flat head screw driver, twist it (with caution) and the hood should pop open.

My first e30 .

But i opened it once before & it worked fine.. now it won't open .
I think the wire that pulls the lever broke.
