Died on the road no won't start.

    1991 325i
Car cranks strong acts like its about to start then doesn't. Or simply just cranks.
Haynes manual I have isn't helping too much.
It said I have 2 fuel pump but according to this forum I only have the one main pump located under the rear seat on the passenger side. I checked for continuity across the pump and that checked out.

One note, its been starting hard lately and there is a check engine light currently on.

Your car only has one pump and it is mounted in the tank.

Checking continuty of the pump only says that the winding aren't burned out. The first thing I'd suggest that you do is to see if spark is present when cranking the engine. If there is spark, replace the return line from the FPR with a piece of hose led into a container and crank the engine. If fuel flows into the jug the pump is working, though only a check of rail pressure will tell if it and the FPR are working correctly.

Those two tests will narrow down the possible causes of the no start condition.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Also i had this happen, the connector for the fuel pump. I had one of the connectors push back from going in to connect to the fuel pump. Also check the fuel pressure regulator as well.

what exactly is the stomp test and what is it intended to show me?

I'll have to recharge the battery before i do anymore testing

A year ago my 1990 325is stalled while driving 65mph on the Long Island Expressway just as rush hour was beginning. I was able to cruise to the breakdown lane. Waited a bit it started got another couple of hundred yards and it stalled again. Waited for highway authorized tow to a local hole in the wall service station. Told them thought the fuel pump may have crapped out. They sprayed carb cleaner into the manifold, it started up. A day later I brought them a new fuel pump to install and drove off into the sunset.

Lately I've had difficulty starting after letting the car sit for a while after running. No problem starting cold in the morning. Replaced the FPR and the problem is gone. Car is happy, I am happy. Hopefully you'll hit on the problem.

thing is pump is a new walboro, and they take decent abuse before breaking. I put the battery on a charger so i'm just waiting for that to charge up, starters acting funny, i'm hoping its from the low battery but its been seeing a more than normal amount of use lately due to the hard starts and my gf thinking continuing to try to start it the other night when it crapped out was a good idea (i know i know she shouldn't have been out of the kitchen) so yeah, can 'o' wormz

This just happened to me! Driving the car to my Tech's garage cause the car kept dying on me. Car died at a major intersection during rush hour!!!! My Tech came out and brought a new crank sensor with him changed it right there and vrrrmm she started.....end of story.
                    Hopefully that helps.

I'll try the stomp test before work and see what codes pop up, codes will be displayed on the SRS light correct?

uhhhh what? There is one light that says "check engine", the "check" light simply tells you to check your warning light panel (by your sunroof).

nevermind lol, anyways i fixed it, there was a short in the pump connector where it connects to the tank, ended up being pretty easy once i had enough battery to test everything. just freaked out initially i guess, better to be paranoid and prepared than fucked.
