    How important is this plate?

#17 is it absolutly needed? it goes between the engine block and the transmission. I just finished the 5-speed swap on my dad's car and didn't put it back in. I'm having trouble with the starter not engaging the flywheel and getting jamed beside it. I know this plate would of spaced the starter out a little from the flywheel. I got the car to start once and it drives and shifts perfect just won't start sometimes.

its a heat shield, i'd go back in and put it in, its there for a reason. pulling a tranny takes a couple hours. its worth it

I was under the assumption that the starter kind of mounted on this.

Also, if it's not on, the passeneger side of the bell housing is exposed (right next to the block) Which is definately not a great thing!

at least it was on my car...if I had taken it off.

Starter isn't mounted to it, it just holds the starter in place when the tranny is removed.

also would probably cause your binding problem because of the spacing, and if its a heat shield you want that!

well it didn't cause the binding problem, as I stuck just the starter spacer portion back in and no help.
