    How do the stroking combos work with the M50? I had entertained buying an S50 but it just doesnt seem all that possible. WIll i need custom pistons?what kind of HP can you expect from a stroked M50 with just the bolt ons? Thanks

        Depends what you do. Either way you will have to have your pistons shaved or buy custom pistons. You can bore to 85.5mm with a vanos block, and 86mm wiht a non-vanos block. If you do the vanos engine, you should be looking at around 230-240engine hp. If you do the headwork with cams, you are talking atleast that much in rwhp. If you do a non-vanos, your looking at about 250engine hp, maybe a little more. It already has a 250/9.6 exhaust cam. Put in a Schrick 256/10.6 intake cam and your talking quite a bit of power.

          So if i get a NON vanos and bore to 86mm get custom pistons, what crank do i use?
          Whats better for mostly street car with ocasional track use, vanos or non? I dont think i want to go crazy with this swap, i was just originally planning to swap in an M50 with some bolt ons and some software. What kind of #'s could you get from that setup.
          Vanos M50
          M3 cams or better
          software
          free flow exhaust
          Just the basics.

            For anything above a mild stroker, vanos is better 10:1. It has the ability to do a lot more and gain more power from those things. The non-vanos will require less money to make some power. You can use either the 3.2L crank or the 3.0L crank. You use 3.0L rods.

            An M50 vanos with intake, straight exhaust, M3 cams, and software should put you at atleast 200whp. That combined with your weight of around 2700lbs makes your power to weight ratio better than an E36 M3. In theory you should be faster, and forsure if you keep the 3.73 diff out back. An M50 vanos is a great engine no doubt, but dollar for dollar it would be cheaper to build a streetable non-vanos engine.

                  so for how much do you think a set up like that would cost
                  also if you bore a NON-vanos to 86mm do you have to get custom pistons or can you still use the stock pistons?

                    First off if you BORE anything you MUST get custom pistons as the old ones will just drop right through the cylinder. The cost depends on how much you can do your self, if you have hookups, BUT plan on about 800ish for pistons. + motor,ecu,harness + extra parts + swap cost (if you cant do it yourself)

                      Here is a short figure of the cost to do a transplant:

                      Engine/ECU/Harness/Manifolds etc.. = $1000
                      M5 engine mounts = $350
                      Exhaust = $500
                      Intake = $200
                      Swap CD = $150
                      Cooling hoses = $100
                      Misc. Parts = $200
                      Total = $2500
                      There is a lot more that goes into it other than that, but those are prices if you do everything yourself.

                                I'm assuming the e34s got the vanos update when the e36s got it, but mine's a '91, so it's non-vanos, plus this keeps everything in my car '91 vintage :)

                                Will do, Brian
