    Brand New noisy fuel pump?

    Hey all,

Just bought my 85' 325e lemon last week (needed new sp wires, alternator, battery, and tons more). Anyways I had my mechanic come over and diagnose why it wasn't starting recently: a bad in-line fuel pump. I just replaced it with a bosch and the car runs fine now but the pump is pretty noisy (as noisy as the bad one). About as loud as windshield washer nozzles. Should I be worried? Is something else making the noise?

    Thanks

I would guess that the pump is having a hard time for some reason. Check your fuel pressure. If it's obscenely high (should be 40-50psi), then you have a clogged return line. If it's low, then there is something wrong with the supply. It seems like most E30s have been highsided at some point in their life, denting the fuel tank. This can choke the in-tank transfer pump. Perhaps the transfer pump itself is dead. Just some ideas...

A noisy new high pressure pump is; a) a bad pump, b) a pump that is having to work too hard, c) damage to the pump from rust in the tank. As BigD suggests, check for an obstruction in the fuel return line or a bad FPR and see if the transfer pump is working. Replace the filter and check for rust in the tank.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
