Is dynomat lighter than OEM sound deadening?

    Ok...

Im trying to create a little sleeper out of my car (not so much for the bimmer folk but for the stupid honda crowd that needs to be tought a lesson in my area). I have finished the M30 swap and the beotch is stupid fast. Im trying to maintain a stock look to my car by keeping the trunk and interior looking normal. However I went and chisseled out the black tar sound deadening stuff under the back seat and in the trunk. That was about 80lbs worth of crap right there. I was surprised when I tried to lift the garbage can I put most of it into.

Now obviously since this has been done car noise is stupid load. Mostly from the wine of the differential at speed. If I sparingly use Dynomat under the back seat can I reduce some of the noise without putting back the weight I just took off? People say dynomat is heavy... Im just wondering if its as heavy as the black stuff and is it more effective than the OEM sound deadening.

i doubt it dyno matt is made with lead, all the best sound deading material has lead in it. however if you go to a hotrod shop they sell sound deading that is a cloth material, it works decent, and weighs next to nothing. its about 20$ can' a roll. i forget what the name is tho. but all the hot rod shops in my area carry it so maybe the ones there do too... anyways good luck sounds like a fun car.

Although I took out some of my original sound deadening and added a VW felt insulation (my local leather reupholster had rolls of it cheap), I did do some research on this a few years back. There were two products that caught my eye. One is called Thinsulate, and is the new type of insulation that is used in coats and boots, however it has also proven to be an excellent sound deadener. It was new on the market back when, and ususally not sold retail. Prices were on the steep side too, but perhaps it is more widely available now. Check up on it and let me know too!

An other product that caught my eye, but never followed up on this one, was some felt type insulation that was used in Rolls Royce, and sold through a catalog. It was in some British car magazine, and I can't remember now.

The VW felt type material is super light of course, but not the best stuff for sound deadening.

Regular dynomat is the same damn thing. Dynomat extreme is lighter for the same effect but if you use it as much as the stock insulation the savings are minimal.

Its made of a butyl gel that you can spread out with a roller. Use it to seal cavities like your door and the pockets in the back (if 2-door) and around the tranny tunnel to reduce the tranny whine.

It wont get rid of the clunk type noise but it stops some wind noise and mostly the types of noise that would cause the metal to resonate.
        Im now E30less.
