Fuel leak at full (not what you think)

I have a 88 325i sedan date code 08/87, but later tank setup with a fuel pump on passengers side and fuel sending unit on drivers side. When topping off the tank i smell fuel and see it dripping to the almost the point of a stream on the drivers side just below the passengers door. I popped up the rear seat and access panel and see fuel coming out of the top of the sending unit (not around the gasket). It is leaking out the plastic nub next to the connector. the question is do i have to replace the whole unit or can i just seal that nub?

You might be able to seal off the leak with JBweld or gas tank epoxy.

I am not to concerned with what to seal it with at this time (thanks for the recommendation) but rather i should seal that piece, is it a vent?

It isn't a vent.
