    Early model in-tank fuel pumps

I was under the impression that the early 318i and 325 and even first year 325i have the same pump but it doesn't look that way.

The two pump system has the housing with line in and out, but on top of that the location or orientation of the pipes on the housings is different between years/models AND the height or the pump assembly is also different?

example shows cross reference here, but I am seeing they are not the same...

A quick peak at realoem.com shows the same part numbers for the in-tank transfer pump for cars with the two pump system. I didn't check all models and years, so there could be an exception. Go to real oem.com and plug in the VIN for your car and see what part number is called out
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Here are some pictures to show the differences, both are early pumps with fuel in and out lines. What I did is swapped the pump itself between the two housings. My car actually had an original pump, I can't believe it worked for 25 years.....

here you can see the difference on the top of the housing..

Mine was an original pump as well when it died a few months back. Didn't think that the early pumps were different from each other, I suppose I got lucky when ordering mine.

jlevie is quickly answering every tech question on this board. Is there a bolt on the e30 that your wrench hasn't turned?

I just found my external pump from my retired early model car in the giant bin of parts to sell. Sorry, doesn't help this thread.
