No start after driving through puddle

    Okay, here is the story:
    1986 325e

Yesterday was a bit warmer so the snow started melting. I was driving home and there was a considerable size puddle on the way home. I know it wasn't deep because it always happens when it rains and I've never had a problem before. Well I drove through it and my car died immediately. So I sit there for a few minutes trying to restart it and for the first few minutes it kinda sputters but does eventually start. After that it drives just fine. So I finish the drive home and park it in the driveway, come out the next morning and it won't start. I turn the key and the starter kicks on but no sputtering just the starter engaging the flywheel. I turn the key off and the started keeps going. Finally let out the clutch and the starter stops. Try a few times and the same thing happens.

Im guessing it has to be something electrical. Checked all the fuses and all were good. When I turn the key on, I can hear the fuel pump start humming so I know thats good. Cap, rotor, and plug wires were replaced last year about this time. I checked the resistances in the ignition coil and the wires and all were good. Nothing out of the ordinary on the starter connections. Going to be checking spark plugs next. Also I pulled my airbox to get a better look at the starter and found a small amount of gas sitting in my throttle body. Enough to slowly drip out (3-4 drip) when I open the throttle.

    Anybody have any ideas?

The puddle was 3/4 of the street wide. Sorry I didn't slam on my brakes, reverse, and go around. Not that this was possible as there were cars behind me.

Known working battery and now starter stays on even with clutch out.

you could have gotten water in your intake, but doubtful. This happened to my buddy on his truck going through a deeper puddle than yours, but it could be the same thing. he had to wait 30 mins ish and then it cranked for a good while then turned over.

Could be but it started up maybe 5 min after the puddle and then 14 hours later it wont start. I tried cranking it for a good while last night and still nothing.

hmm thats wierd. thinking maybe water could have gotten to something electrical in the span of 14 hrs. check ur afm? maybe ignition to.

No idea how this makes any sense.

Pulled spark plugs 1 and 6 this afternoon to double check I was getting spark. Plugs look good and when starting I get spark. Then pull plugs 2 and 5 and try to start and now I get some sputtering. Plug 2 had a little corrosion around the widest part. So I put plug 5 back and left plug 2 out.Try starting again and same thing as before, no start and starter kept running. So I switch it around, plug 5 out and plug 2 in. Starts right up, obviously running like shit put still running. Starter didnt stay on. Keep it from dieing for a minute or two and shut it off. Go and look at plug 5s hole and there is some liquid, sorta smelled like gas. Put that one back in and now it starts and runs fine. No starter issues, no nothing.
