87 would be perfectly ok for these motors unless your running a chip of course. I always put 89 in because I don't like the thought of running the same gas as large work trucks and vans... ;)

[EDIT] And try to stick to Top Tier gas, http://www.toptiergas.com/

Even w/o a chip or performance mods, my M10 pings like a bitch with 87.

The M20s run totally fine on 87.

My eta runs fine on 87 with a chip, and the head shaved .020".

I've run 89 w/ my eta and chip, but I try to stick to at least 91.

87 is fine for an m20. Anything else is just a waste of cash. Although I run a tank of 91 or 93 every 5 or so fillups to clean things out a bit or if Im doing some performance driving

I had the same problem last week, even with 89 octane. I found that the vacuum advance solenoid had the vacuum cut off. Without knowing that, I had advanced the distributor so it would accelerate. The result was pinging at WOT around 2800 RPM. Once I found that the vacuum advance wasn't working, I removed the relay and retimed the distributor. Finally, it stopped pinging AND accelerates like it should.
Now I need to find out why the vacuum advance control is screwed up. It uses inputs from the coolant temp switch and intake air temp. The ECU controls it. If it's only an emissions thing, I'll just leave it disconnected.
