    Building up a M20? Suggestions for a 2.5i.

To state the obvious, I'm new to this board.......Good ole post #1 right here.

Anyway, I've read up on a lot of forums but haven't found many people with built 2.5i. Everyone goes for 2.7i, 2.8i, or more. How come, is the extra $$ for that extra .2L worth it?

I am interested in building up the 2.5i I have. I have a 110K mile M20 that's do for a Timing Belt change very soon. I've also found while looking through the oil fill cap that I have the break-prone head bolts. This seem to make it a keen time to do the work I'm desiring to on my engine. 8)

As I said, I'm looking to build up the M20. The bottom end is fine and great, so why mess with it? (Unless a stroker is really a great use of $$$) To obtain good performance I am willing to remove my engine to deck the block, but not really wanting to open it up. Someone informed me that I can deck the block and mill the head a lil to obtain a 9.5:1 CR. This is much more cost-effective it seems than buying custom 9.7:1 pistons. Should I look to raise the CR even more, or is 9.5:1 a good, safe #?

Along with the raised compression, I also want a hotter cam. I've read many different opinions on cams in the m20, but am favoriting either the 272 or a 282/272 cam. What would one suggest for lift? Piper cams use 10.44mm or 10.66, while some opt for 11.5mm. I don't want to put too much stress on the valve springs, so maybe I'll go for 11mm or so. To what degree of advantage is a port/polish job on the M20 head?

I understand headers, extrude hone, and larger throttle bodies are not really that helpful for a non-3.0L m20.....so I shouldn't give them another second of my time, right?

Exhaust, mostly likely Stromung or IE, and intake - either stock or heatshielded K&N. I'm also very intrigued by the SMT6/MAF mod. I think that a custom-tuned chip is the only way I can extract the potential HP from this setup.

    Any other suggestions/comments?

Bigger pistons, bigger valves, ported head, hotter cam, individual throttle body setup, MAF/Stand alone engine management.

All of these will help on an m20. How much you want to do will depend on your budget/sanity level. Most people in the states don't bother to do much with the top end of the motor, but just from looking, there are gains to be had.

Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

      sanity level

So with not many people doing top end work, does that mean it's just not as popular, or a waste?

      Say I know I want a MAF/SMT6 setup. And I know I want a hotter cam......
I want to stay somewhere in sane levels, so rule out multi-throttle bodies and larger valves.

I know "worth" is hard to define with cars and is very subjective, but is the stroker worth for a 2.5i? I understand eta boys going for it, they already have the crank and pistons. But should I be looking at it?

I wish there was someone with a higher comp 2.5i to compare to all the strokers......

The going popular "i" stroker options include a 524td and customs pistons to make 9.7:1 CR, right? What about 2.8i? How much would a machine shop charge for increasing the bore?

I guess I wish someone could tell me what gains could be had from decking the block and top-end work. And how much more gains could be had with stroking the same setup.

      Charlie, thanks for your input!

      p.s. Fred Kim's website rocks!

Are there any other BMW rebuilders I should be looking at for reference besides Kormanfastbmw.com, VACmotorsports.com, and Racetep.com? I should maybe get in touch with Stu's father as well, I've heard good things about him on boards.

Your cylinder head will be prepared by the same race engine technicians that build our winning race engines.
I'm going to try to give them a call as well during the week. Or email them.
