SI boards interchangeable?

I'm reading that even my 85's cluster should work in my 86, but I thought there was a coding chip or some crap like that.

Can anyone confirm? Can I at least steal the SI board from the 85 vdo cluster and put it in my 86 ES VDO cluster?

That should work fine. I have an 85 VDO cluster and an 89 Motomete cluster and the SI boards wouldnt swap.
