I have 99 problems and my turn signal is one of them..

The car i recently purchased has a weird electrical gremlin that the po failed to tell me (ofcourse). When ever i pull my lightswitch my left turn signal just stays on, it doesn't blink, flash, strobe, etc etc. Even when i try to operate the turn signal, the passenger's side light operates just fine, but when i flip the stalk in the other direction the driver's side signal again, doesn't flash. the thing that gets me is that when the lights are off the turnsignals operate just fine.

Well if anyone can shed some light on this mystery it would be greatly appreciated.

check for any non factory wiring around the light switch and the hazard switch

Not to sound oblivious and stupid, but where do I go from there?

This may be totally irrelevant but my blinkers weren't working at all (nor was my heater fan, mirror motors, or windows, or hazard lights). Castro's tracked the problem down to a short in the starter. You never know where the short is coming from. :(

9 posts and not one shred of actual help WTF R3V, are we not gonna help Spoogeload R3Vpants out here?

Bob, I bet that most of your "problem" is simply incorrect bulbs, corroded sockets or incorrect installation of bulbs.

Get all face level with the turn signal housings, pop the bulbs out. Grab the can of CRC Electrical Contact Cleaner and your pipe cleaners (you own an E30, you better have both) and scub-a dub on all those contacts.

Now, of course, if I had ANY FUCKING CLUE what CAR you have, I might be able to add more useful info, like why the grounds are fucked up, what kind of bulbs you had best have in there, why you cannot use an 1157 in its place, etc, etc.

So: MAKE GODDAMN SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT BULB (which I bet you have 1157s) and make sure the contacts are properly clean.

Another useful tip is have the lights on when you are putting the bulb in. If you have waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles hands, wear gloves or some shit, or maybe get some callouses.

                    Closing SOON!

SHIT!, my fault for not specifing the problem throughly!
                      its a '91 325i with premium sound
anyways, I can rule out the bulb theory since i replaced the tail light and it still has the same issue (I can't speak for the cluster just yet) and now the driver-side window stops working every now and then. I also noticed on the window switches and the various cluster lights, that they fluxuate from dim to bright
so know I'm thinking it might be the alternator giving me problems,
                      or possibly a short circuit.....

                      so whatcha think?

This has happened to me before when I was replacing my valence. We had to unplug the signals to get it and when we plugged them back in the driver's was doing exactly how you described. Not blinking. If you unplug the signal wiring from the bulb assembly, there are 3 wires (at least on my '90 325i there were) and they have to go into the rubber plug in the correct arrangement. At the end of the wires there should be a number on each of the wires. Mine had the numbers 1,2, and 5. The rubber plug that the wires go into doesn't have a corresponding number on it I don't think, but we just tried the different combinations until it worked. I don't know if that helps much but I hope it does--worked for me at least. About them working only with the lights off I don't know...

Have you checked wiring around the light switch, or taken a multimeter to the switch itself? I had a light switch like, WELD itself shut and everything went wonky.
Does your car have an aftermarket radio, or security system? I've seen many junkers where the owner had wired in the security system's 'blinky feature' right into the wiring after the switch, which doesn't seem bad until you cross the wrong ones or get shorts, feedback, etc.. at least 5 of my 99 problems were solved by checking/replacing the switch & wires and cleaning the common ground that's like 10cm away from it. The rest were just stuff like dissolved wiring, and nothing a good exorcism can't solve.
The AC and windows sound more like the switches, or maybe fuses or possibly something like a relay. Stick one end of the multimeter in the fuse hole, and the other end at the switch for whatever you're testing and see if there's a consistent circuit.
If you're handy with a multimeter, that problem can be solved in no time - just start by isolating circuits and yell at them.
