I want to chip my 84 eta but I cant do it with the stock ECU as I have been led to beleive. So I found a couple place that I can get ECU's from but I dont know what year or which number to get. I know one of the numbers for an ECU is 027, but I dont know which kind you can chip, I am looking to put a JC chip in one.

If you have a 0 261 200 007 ecu, it can not be chipped. If it's a 021, you can do it by installing a socket. The 027 already has the socket.Originally posted by nefarious7907

While we're on the subject of ECU's, I may need to swap my unchipped ECU (#525) with another from an older E30. Will it matter if the last three digits aren't the same?

You can swap it but try not to use a 153, they are not usually as good. A 173 would be better. (I'll have a chip out for the 525 soon)

Well, Mark, you tell me why I shouldn't swap it! Sometimes my car takes 4-5 cranks to get started, and sometimes it fires on the first crank. Someone had suggested to me that the computer might be on its way out.
After having read the entire discussion, what do you think is wrong with my car?
