vacum hose near the battery in the trunk... what does it do

i was cleaning out my trunk today and i saw this and its not plugged into anything.. there is like a clear plastic box on the end of the hose but there is another hole in the box anyone know what this is for

yah it plugs into your battery. you may need a connector if it is an interstate battery, other wise it should plug right on. if you have the right battery for e30's

wow i just checked my battery and its an interstate battery... and sure enough theres a vacuum hose sitting there not plugged into anything. would this cause the inspection light to stay on? also, where would i get a connector?
