12V Lighter plug, need to hardwire

I need to modify a wire that has a cigarette lighter plug at the end so that I can hardwire it into the trunk. How does it work, is one wire power and the other ground?

I have no idea how cigar plugs work. I'n thinking of just cutting the end off and testing the wires on a AA, but before I do anything drastic I wanted some advice.

Well, one has a white stripe. That is power?

        what is the other one?

the lighter may also be marked to give you a clue as to what is what.

They are both black, but one has a white stripe. The plug is blank.

when in doubt, use a voltmeter.

solid black is negative. but as rob said... not a bad idea to check w/ a voltmeter.

It's not the car's wires I'm asking about, it's what I'm attatching to them. Therefore a voltmeter wouldn't do much for me.

Ah well, this is simple enough, I just gotta strip this wire and try it out.
