    2 heat related questions.

1st. My tranny seems to put out an inordinate amount of heat. So much so that if i grab the bottom of the shift lever through the boot (near the ball), the lever is almost hot to the touch. Since i have no ashtray, i can reach under the console and touch the chassis metal, which is significantly hotter. Is this normal? If not, what the hell could be generating so much heat in the tunnel?

2nd. My car has always run at or slighly above (1mm) the 1/4 mark on the guage. Today i noticed that it was above 1/2. This was in stop and go traffic, and at a standstill. When i started to get into open roads and cruise, it quickly went back down to 1/4. Whenever i came to a stop light, it would start to rise to 1/2 again, then when moving it would sink to 1/4. This is a dying fan/fan clutch/water pump, right? If not, what else is going wrong?

#1, some heat is normal. Check the oil in there and make sure its full and not a million years old. Thats about all you can do for it.

      #2, fan clutch.

That's true if he has a M42. The M20s run colder.

All 3 of my M20s have run just below the half way point.

Yeah, the M20 should fall below 1/2. I'm trying to say that the M42 stays at 1/2.

I just ordered a new fan clutch tonight via eap4parts.com It was $64 shipped to Indiana from Oregon. I have the same heat problem (number 2). So if you wanna wait a week to see what happens when I swap my fan clutch I will let ya know what happens with it :)

Well, i don't think the fan clutch died on it's own. I looked today and the fan is actually stuck. It hit the bottom lip of the radiator, and stuck there. Two blades are snipped off at the corners (think chamfered), so i'm guessing the PO had it atleast hitting before. Is there any reason why the fan would shift so much as to hit the radiator bottom? The motor mounts are brand new, less than 3 weeks.

My M20 runs at the halfway mark in heavy traffic in hot weather and/or when the A/C is running on a hot day. Otherwise runs just a couple of needle-widths above the lower normal mark.
