    wheel bearing question...

so my beater has a wheel bearing that is just starting to make a little bit of noise...

i am really not interested in dropping coin on replacing it being that ill only be driving the car another month or 2 before stripping it and cutting it up with a demo saw..

my question is do you guys think it ll be ok if i pop the dust cap off and toss some fresh grease in there it may help? i ve done it on beaters before (lot cars and the such) or should i just leave it be?

just leave it. I let one go for 30k miles. True story.

It started to get pretty dang loud towards the end, though.

    It didn't fail.

thanks..i am def not one to let things slide but the car is beat and tired and its not worth dropping a dime into beyond a few small things (doing a tranny fluid and filter change today..total cost like 30 bucks )

i still crack a smile when i drive her tho had her a year paid 1k for her and she does not owe me a thing at this point..

Once a front wheel bearing starts making noise the progression towards complete failure is pretty quick. A bearing/hub doesn't cost all that much and if you are going to part out the car you should be able to recover the cost.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i only saw the bearings on pelican (51 bucks or so) didnt see the hub and bearing together on there..

and real oem gives a price of 200 for the hub and bearing...

granted i didnt search beyond that for prices.. any suggestions to where i may find the hub and bearing together cheap?

i let a rear go bad for too long on my e36. when we went to change it, i could literally move the wheel and hub together a good 12 degrees or so in every direction

hunt the junk yards for a whole strut assembly/hub,bearing i tend to have good luck with that.

But I fail to see the logic in spending $$ doing a tranny fluid + filter but not doing a bearing........

You can find a $10 wheel bearing (for the rear) on autopartswarehouse.com or something. I used the $10 one and it has been working fine.

                    easy install.

because all i had to pay for was fluid ..had the filter and gasket kit given to me ..

and it was not wanting to shift out of first untill fully warmed up and then shifting hard ..i dont mind driving with a noisy wheel bearing but hated having the tranny shift like it was..

like i said only gonna be driving it for another month or so ..so overall its not too big of an issue for me..since i only drive to my jobs and the store
