    rev limited at differing rpm

Recently my car has begun to rev limit anywhere between 5-6.5k rpm. It seems to be random. I have an eta with I head and 173 ecu. It's been operating normally since September, up until about a month ago.

I'm guessing it's either a bad cluster (bought used in November) or a bad sensor in the diff. The fpr is new as of September, but I didn't replace any fuel pumps or the fuel filter at the time of rebuild. The way it cuts out very suddenly seems electronic though and not from fuel starvation.

    Anyone have experience with this?

This won't be the cluster or speed sensor. It could be a bad CPS or harmonic balancer, flaky main or fuel pump relay, fuel system problem, bad fusible link, or ground problem. On occasion it will be a bad engine harness or a bad DME.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I was hoping that maybe it was actually revving to 6.5k every time and that the cluster was just not reading properly.

Jim, where would you start troubleshooting? The CPS is fairly new as well, so the relays?
