    BMW Original Factory Oil

I recently had my oil changed at a BMW dealership for free about two weeks ago.

I just want to know, did they put synthetic oil in my car? Or are there different kinds of BMW oil? I want to know if there'd be an adverse change in the way my oil performs if I switch back to some Mobil 1 20w-50.

My 3000 miles are almost up so I want to change the oil soon.

Last time I was at the dealer, they were selling Castrol Synthetic.

I don't know what they use now, or if what they sell in the states is the same as what they sell here.

The dealership by me offers regular and synthetic. It's your choice. Not sure about your dealer though.

FYI the BMW synthetic 5w30 is nothing more then Castrol Syntec.

It's castrol synthetic, but the more I see that stuff the less I like it. It's much darker than regular Castrol SuperSyn, and there always seems to be a lot of moisture retianed in the engine with that stuff. You get a lot of steam out of the oil filler on a hot engine, and a lot of corrsion and rust deposited on the inside of the oil cap and valve cover. BMW has something customized in it that's kind of fishy to me. Next time you get a car that has consistantly run that oil scrape some of the rust crap off the bottom of the oil cap and you'll see what I mean...

If they did the change for free you probably got dino oil, either some brand of 20-50, or the BMW branded 10-40 dino oil they sell in the red label bottles.

I see that constantly with all synthetic oils especially with Mobil 1. With Mobil 1 I see more buildup and crust inside a motor than with any other oil. I can't stand the shit.

My local dealer BELIEVE IT OR NOT USES PENZOIL for oil changes! LOL!

In another FACT that most people don't know, is you DO NOT have to run synthetic in the new engines. I have technical information from BMW NA that specifics as long as oil meets a certain GL spec then it is ok to use dino or synth oil.

That said I would much rather run dino than synth.
