    Bad switch or short?

I replaced the dash last weekend and then put in a new used defroster switch. My old switch worked aside from the button mechanism would get stuck. I turned on the car and the new switch started smoking. I turned off the car, took out the switch and took it apart. This is what it looks like.

Could this be a faulty switch or is it likely I bent and cracked some old wires when replacing my dash. I couldn't find any melted wires but most of them are taped up. Any risk in driving without the deforst switch untli I find time to fix it?

I would take a good ohm meter and test for shorts from all the wires going to and coming from that switch.
