found this spliced into the heater hoses. Part number comes back as a thermostat. this one is all silicated up, and no good. are they really needed, or is it extra bullshit that isnt really needed?
I saved 15% on my Bimmer parts by switching to ...
BUMP! Looking at what you guys' are doing about these "Secondary" Thermostats.
Apparently it was a recall they installed in our cars to keep HOT COOLANT from spraying all over your feet? How many of you guys are keeping these, and what you doing to "delete" or relocate them? I'm going to cross this thread into the Track sub forum as well.
Hoping to see some creative answers! Thanks for your time.
I delete that mess on any car that has it. The only case where it would be needed is if the driver is brain dead and doesn't shut down the car when the needle approaches the 3/4 mark.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Was curious about this when I was doing all my hoses and had the intake mani out. It was a bitch trying to get the hose clamp to bite onto the smaller one outlet. Guess I'm gonna rip it out when I start doing the fuel lines..
Anyone have a cheap easy effective solution for bypassing other than a regular 1/4" pipe or something similar to joint?
I deleted mine when I did belt and hose replacement last year. At that time I think my primary thermostat was stuck open because my temp gauge would only go about 1/3 up, never beyond. After new 80° thermostat, secondary thermostat delete, new coolant and hoses, my car runs right at the 1/2 line or just below consistently. If it tries to go beyond 1/2, thermostat opens and car cools -- as it should. Granted, I don't rally my car very hard, but I drive it like I mean it. Bottom line -- I haven't seen any ill effects of the secondary thermostat delete.
